Chhatra League leader expelled for pushing principal into pond in Rajshahi

Chhatra League has permanently expelled Kamal Hossain Sourav, joint general secretary of its Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute unit, for his involvement in pushing the institute’s principal into a pond on the campus.

The central executive committee of the organization took the decision on Sunday, a day after the incident took place and drew widespread criticism.

In a statement, Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, said Sourav was expelled permanently for the unpleasant incident taken place with the polytechnic institute’s principal and violating the party discipline.

“At the same time, all the political activities of the institute’s Chhatra League unit have also been suspended,” the statement added.

The press release was signed by Chhatra League acting president Al-Nahean Khan Joy and its acting general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee.

Earlier in the day, Rajshahi police arrested five students for their involvement in the incident.

Meanwhile, a group of teachers and students of the institute held a demonstration in front of the institution on Sunday morning, demanding punishment for the perpetrators.

On Saturday, Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute Principal Engineer Farid Uddin Ahmed was pushed into a pond by students belonging to the institute’s Chhatra League unit.

A case was filed against 50 people with Chandrima police station in this regard.
