State Councilor and Head of China’s Ministry of National Defence Wei Fenghe arrives in Dhaka this (Tuesday) morning on a brief but important visit.
The Chinese Defence Minister will arrive in Dhaka this morning and leave here in the afternoon for Colombo.
As per the programme schedule, the Chinese minister is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka at 9:00am and then visit Bangabandhu Memorial Museum to pay homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He is expected to call on President M Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban at 3:00pm and meet Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed.
Foreign Ministry officials said the Chinese minister will discuss issues, including cooperation to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
Fenghe’s visit follows Bangladesh’s decision to join China’s Emergency Vaccine Storage Facility for COVID for South Asia amid an uncertainty over getting required vaccine doses from India.
Notably, China is the only country with which Bangladesh has a defence cooperation agreement and it is the largest supplier of arms for Bangladesh defence. Bangladesh Navy purchased its first submarine from China.
China is Bangladesh’s biggest trading partner. Additionally, it is a development partner and is investing heavily in various infrastructure projects.
