An initiative has been taken to produce vaccines in the country to prevent the coronavirus infection. As part of this, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given policy approval for the production of coronavirus vaccine locally with the technical assistance of Russia and China.
A proposal to this effect was approved at a virtual meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday (April 28).
At the end of the meeting, Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division Shahida Akhter said a total of three proposals were presented at the meeting of the Economic Affairs Committee.
The proposal to produce the vaccine in Bangladesh has been approved in principle following the direct purchase method from Russia’s Sputnik and China’s Sinopharm. However, it was not immediately clear which companies could produce the virus locally. However, the two vaccines will be made by those who have the ability to make such vaccines.
She said Russia and China have discussed the issue of coronavirus vaccine production in Bangladesh. Sputnik is of Russia while Sinopharm of China. The amount of money involved in this matter will be known when the proposal comes to the procurement committee. Now only policy approval has been given.
