A Dhaka court acquitted Shafat Ahmed, son of Apan Jewellers co-owner Dildar Ahmed and four other accused in a case filed over the alleged rape of two university students at the Raintree hotel in the city.
Judge of No. 7 Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Begum Mosammat Kamrunnahar delivered the verdict in the case on Thursday (November 11).
Earlier, the accused were produced before the court from Keraniganj central jail at 10:20 am.
The four other accused are Shafat’s friends Shadman Sakif and Nayeem Ashraf alias Halim, Shafat’s driver Billal Hossain and bodyguard Rahmat Ali.
Judge Begum Mosammat Kamrunnahar was supposed to deliver the verdict October 27 but lower court activities remained suspended on the day due to the death of veteran lawyer Abdul Baset Majumder. Later, the delivery date of the verdict in the case was deferred to today, November 11.
On October 3, the court rejected the bail petitions filed by the accused and sent them to jail.
It is to be mentioned that a case was filed against five persons with Banani Police Station on May 6, 2017, for allegedly raping the two students of a private university in Dhaka at gunpoint at a “birthday party” on March 28 of that year at the Raintree Hotel in the capital’s Banani.
