The government has taken up a mega project involving Tk 3500 crore for construction of an elevated expressway in the remote and isolated haor area of Sunamganj to develop the rural economy.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project on Tuesday.
The approval came at the ECNEC meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the auditorium of the National Economic Council in Dhaka.
The premier, also the ECNEC chairperson, joined the meeting virtually from her official residence Ganobhaban.
Planning Minister MA Mannan briefed reporters after the meeting.
Under the development programme, Dharmapasha, Tahirpur, Jamalganj and Dirai upazilas of the district will come under an improved communication system.
The expressway will be constructed under the project ‘Rural Infrastructure Development in Haor Area,’ and be implemented by the local government engineering department (LGED).
