Rafiqul Islam, a newly elected Union Parishad member of Bhabanipur union under Phulbaria upazila in Mymensigh, has passed SSC this year at the age of 57, creating a huge optimism among people.
His achievement also got new dimension in the area as he passed the exam just after electing UP member.
He secured 473 votes with the Lock Symbol in the fourth phase of UP Election, becoming elected for the second time in a row.
Earlier, he was elected UP member in 2016.
On Thursday (December 30), he secured GPA-4.46 in the SSC exams.
Rafiqul Islam said, “He had to stop his study due to illness nearly 45 years ago when he was in class-8. He always wants to run his study.”
Seventh grader Abdullah Al Maruf, son of Rafiqul Islam, said, “His father took admission to Sonkanda Dr Abul Hossain Ibn Sayeed Technical School in 2018 because of great interest in studies. Sometimes, people laugh when they both- son and father- went to school together. But his shrugged off that and was stick with his interest.”
“Now, I got more optimism after my father passed the exam,” he added.
Abdus Salam, a teacher of Sonkanda Dr Abul Hossain Ibn Sayeed Technical School, said, “We were astonished when Rafiqul Islam took admission in class-9. But he was very adamant for studies. For this, we encouraged him, saying ‘Study counts no age’. Finally, he passed the examination. We feel proud of him.”
UP member Rafiqul Islam said, “It is hard to understand the importance of education without going in studies. My dream was to study, but did not have the opportunity as a child, so I’m doing at this age. Now I will continue my studies after getting admitted in college.”
