The Ministry of Shipping has undertaken a project to build an ‘eco-port’ on the banks of the river Padma at Shimulia in Munshiganj in a bid to attract tourists.
Under the project, various types of facilities including river cruise (river travel), island leisure center, natural walkway trail, naval museum and eco-park will be constructed.
The ministry has taken the plan to build this recreation center with the idea that 60 lakh local and foreign tourists will visit the Padma Bridge every year.
After opening the Padma Bridge, these establishments will be built on 15-18 acres of unused land of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) at Shimulia. The potential cost is estimated at Tk 400 crore. It will be built on the basis of public-private partnership (PPP).
BIWTA has planned to generate revenue through this.
Ministry of Shipping and BIWTA sources informed this.
It is learned that BIWTA presented a project proposal at a review meeting held at the Ministry of Shipping last Sunday (June 5). Shipping Ministry Secretary Md Mostafa Kamal presided over the meeting. At that meeting, BIWTA was asked to finalize the project proposal with some observations and instructions.
