EU praises the steps taken by govt to reform electoral system

The visiting European Union delegation appreciated the reforms taken by the Bangladesh government to institutionalize the electoral system.

Among them, they praised the Awami League government for giving up the power of appointing the Chief Election Commission and the Election Commissioner, which was in the hands of the Prime Minister.

Sources said that the issue was discussed at the meeting between Awami League and European Union representatives at Hotel Sheraton in the capital’s Banani on Saturday noon (July 15).

Four members of the EU participated in the meeting led by Salori Ricardo while AL’s delegation was led by party general secretary Obaidul Quader.

Other members of the EU delegation are Deputy Chief Observer of EU Election Observation Mission Dimitra Ioannou, Alves Christina Dos Ramos, EU delegation’s Charge d’Affaires Dr. Brend Spanier and Sebastian Rieger Braun, Political Officer of the EU Delegation.

The European Union has asked Awami League to know about the election environment, the electoral law of Bangladesh and the electoral system. Meanwhile, Awami League informed them about the whole matter.

According to the party, the Awami League government tried to institutionalize the entire electoral system after coming to power. They have reformed the essential issues of holding free, fair and unbiassed elections.

The EU delegation was also informed that a total of 66 laws have been amended regarding elections in Bangladesh. Of them, Awami League has done 55.

Meanwhile, the delegation appreciated the initiatives taken by the government to hold a peaceful and acceptable election.
