Shariatpur 72 fish hunters arrested, Deputy Commissioner himself in operation to protect hilsa

72 fish hunters have been arrested in Shariatpur’s Naria in Padma river and various fish stocks. The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Shariatpur conducted an operation to protect Ma Hilsa. Parvez Hasan.

Naria Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) confirmed this information on Sunday (October 16) afternoon. Parvez. Earlier on October 15 (Saturday) from 11:00 pm to 4:00 am this operation was conducted at different points of Naria upazila.

Meanwhile, Naria Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Parvez, Upazila Fisheries Officer. Zakir Hossain Mridha, Naria police and naval police team were present.

Naria Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) office sources said that on Saturday night, 72 fish hunters were arrested after carrying out an operation to protect the hilsa in various fish farms and Padma river of Naria upazila.

On Sunday, 48 fishermen were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment and fined 40,000 taka through a mobile court and 24 were released on bail as they were minors. Besides, 35 trawlers, 800,000 meters of nets and 30 kg of hilsa have been seized in the operation. The seized hilsa has been distributed to orphanages. And the net has been destroyed by burning. Moreover, the temporary arat and bazaar of Naria Sureshwar Charmohan fish were evicted.

District Commissioner Md. Parvez Hasan said, now is the breeding season of hilsa. At this time, mother hilsa lays eggs in fresh water. For this reason, the government has banned all types of fishing from October 7 to October 28 midnight. Ignoring this ban, some unscrupulous fishermen catch hilsa in the river. So we raided different places of Padma River in Naria at night. Our campaign will continue. This campaign is for the sake of the country and the people. With everyone’s cooperation, we can play a more effective role in protecting Mother Hilsa.

According to District Fisheries Office sources, 27 fishers have been arrested in Naria, 8 in Vedarganj and 6 in Gosairhat Upazila in the last 24 hours. 830,000 meters of netting and 140 kg of hilsa have been seized. They have been sentenced and bailed for different periods.

Meanwhile, there are 25 thousand 58 registered fishermen in the district. Among them, 475 tons of rice are being given to 19,000 fishermen. Each fisherman is getting 25 kg of rice.
