Now 1650 tonnes of onions have arrived, the rest will come gradually: Minister of State for Commerce

Commerce State Minister Ahsanul Islam Titu said that now 1650 tons of onions have arrived. The rest of the onions will come slowly. We don’t want our farmers to suffer. Outside India, our onion markets are Egypt and Turkey. From there the onions have to be brought by ship and it takes a long time to bring them. Elections are going on in India. They have a peasant movement going on there. However, they kept their commitment. They have kept their word as a friendly country. Their train came to Sirajganj and gave us onions.

He said these things at the opening ceremony of sale of onions imported from India in front of TCB building in the capital’s Caravan Bazaar on Tuesday morning.

Ahsanul Islam Titu said that the same onion is being sold by the Indian government in Abu Dhabi for $1,200. We got there for $800. We have negotiated a lot. Because we will not be able to subsidize onion in the market at the price they gave. Our senior commerce secretary has worked hard. TCB team was with him.
The Minister of State for Commerce said, we have to take risks in bringing and taking onions. Bringing onions, negotiating everything but we did it ourselves. If the price of onion suddenly fell, it was a possibility. Still, we took the risk. This risk will bring benefits to the common man.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Tapan Kanti Ghosh, Director General of Consumer Affairs Department AHM Safikuzzaman, Ward No. 26 Councilor Shamim Hasan and others also spoke.
