Bogra upazila election presiding officer and agent detained

The police arrested the presiding officer and candidate’s agent for allegedly giving out ballot papers at a polling station in Gabtali for three upazila parishad elections in Bogra. They were arrested from Majhpara Kusum Koli Government Primary School of the upazila around 11:30 on Wednesday.

The arrested are Shahjahan Ali, presiding officer in charge at the center and Ershad Ali, agent of Anaras Pratik.

Bogra District Police Additional Superintendent of Police Suman Ranjan said that presiding officer Shahjahan Ali sent 900 ballot papers with signatures and seals outside the center through agent Ershad Ali. After that, 300 ballots were cast into the box through various voters. Later Ershad was arrested and 600 ballots were recovered. Later, another 900 ballot papers were recovered from the presiding officer. Legal action will be taken against the two detainees.

In addition, two assistant presiding officers have been dismissed for negligence in the incident of casting fake votes in two booths of Sonara High School polling station in the same upazila around 12 noon. The two officers relieved of duty are Hafizar Rahman and Abdul Mottalib. Center Presiding Officer ATM Aminur Islam informed this information.

It is known that there were about three to four lines of male voters standing in the center at 10 am. However, polling officers can be seen sitting idly in the polling booth above. The door of their room was barred from outside. Later, Judicial Magistrate Sadia Afsana Rima came to the spot and relieved them of their duties. Meanwhile, the Assistant Presiding Officers claimed that 10 to 15 unidentified persons came and snatched the ballot books from them.
